About the campaign
2011 was the National Year of Communication. A number of charities got together behind the 'Hello' campaign. The campaign reminded us all how important it is for children and young people to develop good communication skills.

Difficulties with communicating can affect children and young people severely and for life. Children with delayed language skills are at a huge disadvantage to their peers as they struggle to learn and make friends.

The Hello campaign aimed to make communication for all children and young people a priority in homes and schools across the UK so that they can live life to the full.

For more information on the national campaign, visit www.hello.org.uk.

Speech, language and communication play a vital role in our lives. Without being able to talk to, and understand other people, we can't do things like:
  • Communicate with our families.
  • Buy things at the shops.
  • Watch television.
  • Build relationships.
  • Make and keep friends.
  • Learn.
  • Go to work.

The majority of our pupils at Newick House have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), so naturally we believe that communication skills should be a priority in school and in our pupils' homes.

Each month during 2011, our Speech and Language team took us on a journey through communication, using the themes from the national campaign for inspiration. The display board at the front of the school was regularly updated (click on links below for photos). These were accompanied by newsletter updates. Pupils and their families entered the competitions and many were lucky enough to win the WHSmith vouchers on offer!

Newick House School has Specialist Status in Communication and Interaction. We will keep the principles of the 2011 campaign at the heart of what we do, as we move towards our new school, Woodlands Meed. We have updated the display at the front of the school accordingly. Do have a look when you next visit school!

Top Tips

  • Try to pitch what you say and how you talk at the child's own level of talking.
  • Give Children time to listen and time to respond.
  • Make sure you are facing a child or young person.
  • Get down to their level if they are much smaller than you.
  • Follow their lead and focus on their areas of interest.
  • Comment and expand on their language and communication.
